Week 13: Operating principles for chemical product

On week 13 we were introduced to operating principles that exist in our daily lifestyle. We were tasked to identify the operating principles within our chemical product. The operating principle in our terrarium is the water from the soil is taken up into the plant as it grows. The water is then released through the leaves via transpiration. This water condenses on the glass and runs back to the soil where it can be used again.

Ping Pong Ball Launcher:

During the second part of the lesson, we were introduced to mechanisms. We were taught about the six essential mechanisms in various prototypes. The six essential mechanisms are  Actuators, Cams, Gears, Lever, Ratchets and Springs. We were also introduced to the mechanisms on the Ping Pong Ball Launcher and were shown an example on how it works. We were then tasked to create our own Ping Pong Ball launcher with some of the six essential mechanisms. We were also asked to present own Ping Pong Ball Launcher to the class to explain the functionality on how our Ping Pong Ball Launcher works. In our Ping Pong Ball launcher, the essential mechanisms applied were Gear, Spring and Actuator.

How does the Ping Pong Ball Launcher works?

We pulled back the actuator which also cause the spring to be compressed. This will cause the spring to be loaded with potential energy. Pulling back the actuator will cause the cover to be shifted back, allowing the Ping Pong Ball to drop into firing position. When the actuator is release, the potential energy in the spring will be converted to kinetic energy, which will cause the Ping Pong Ball to be propelled forward upon contact. The cover will then be backed into position to prevent the other Ping Pong Balls to be dropped into firing position.
